Gabe and Stephen's stories

Horns are a part of No Doubt's music, so I have decided to dedicate a page to them. The horns have always taken a back seat to the rest of the band. Alan Meade was one of the original horn players. He then moved up to vocals but, less than a year later, left the band to care for his pregnant girlfriend.

Phil Jordan joined No Doubt after Don Hammerstedt left in 1992 to join another band. Gabe Mc Nair joined No Doubt after Phil invited him to a show in 1993. These two guys helped in making The Beacon Street Collection and Tragic Kingdom. Phil left the band to go back to school after recording Tragic Kingdom. He was replaced by Steven Bradley. They definitely know how to put on a show. They also are responsible for backing vocals. Many No Doubt fans take it for granted that Steve looks like Phil. This however is not true, since Phil Jordan is white. It seems that No Doubt has found another great reason to come to their shows: to watch the horn guys do their thing!

Gabe, one of seven siblings, began playing trombone when he was nine years old. Since then he has learned how to play tuba and taught himself how to play drums(which he plays for Senza Motiva) and keyboards/piano. Gabe has been collaborating with Phil Jordan lately, they played a few song with Goldfinger in the studio. They also did some live performances with the Long Beach Dub All-Stars. While growing up he basically performed jazz and classical type music. When No Doubt performed in Tel Aviv it was after a bus was destroyed by a bomb; practically everyone in the area knew someone who was killed. While performing "Don't Speak" the crowd was so loud that they basically drowned out Gwen's voice even though it was one of the smaller venues they played at. He one day hopes to conduct an orchestra as it is one of his life-long dreams.

In 2001, Gabe married a Norweigian actress, Kristin Hjellegjerde. Despite a long distance relationship, in some respects like Gwen and Gavin, Gabe proposed and they married in Norway with No Doubt all in attendance. Now that No Doubt is on tour he along with Stephen and other crew members take part in the after show parties popularized by "Hey Baby". Recently his tenure in No Doubt can be called the longest of any horn player to play with No Doubt, surpassing Eric Carpenter. That is even though he plays more keyboards than trombone nowadays.

Stephen hails from Richmond, CA; the only northern Californian in the band. He grew up wanting to play the drums but was turned to the trumpet after his High School band had no need for a drummer since they already had three. Little did Steve know that it would be so hard, "I knew it only had three valves so I figured it(the trumpet) was simplistic enough and would be easy to pick up...it's one of the hardest instruments to play." No Doubt was not his first band, Steve was part of Dizzybam as well as The Good Life. Both were local Bay Area bands. One thing the bands had in common were Steve and Benjamin Decker. Benjamin knew Steve from Dizzybam, when he started the Good life he asked his friend to help out. The band released a five song ep, played a few shows and stayed together for over a year. Steven is putting together another side project at the moment but there is nothing more to report about that.

When given the choice of touring the world with a rock band or something as waiting tables he would most definitely take the world tour. When I met him I asked him "Isn't this great?(no one noticing him @ the concert)", he just shook his head no. I think that they really deserve some credit and more recognition than they get (which seems to be next to none). His advice to those struggling musicians out there "Sell out now so you don't have to sell out later."

Stephen is a ladies man; as Gwen said in 1997 in Anaheim "how cute is this face?" Now I, being a guy, think he's just a cool dude who has toured and recorded with the band that helped bring rock back from the days of grunge. With the decision to release "Underneath it All" as a single No Doubt turned to Stephen. Where Lady Saw performed on the album, Stephen now has a solo all on his own. It rocks as it has replaced Lady Saw's rap in live performances ! Stephen is working on a solo project with no time table set at the moment for a release (that I know of).

Gabe and Steve appeared in the Green Day song, "King for a Day" from the album Nimrod in 1997. Gabe has appeared with Phil Jordan on "Why Don't You Get a Job" by The Offspring and with Goldfinger recently. Steve performed with Baby Snufkin on the song "Indios De Bacelona". John Dumont, Tom's brother, is Baby Snufkin's bass player.
